by | Jun 3, 2023 | Daily life

The French Riviera offers a plethora of enchanting hikes that combine the beauty of the Mediterranean coastline with stunning natural landscapes.

Whether you want to explore a peninsular, traverse across coastal trails or reach new heights, there is a wide range of hikes, which promise unforgettable views and an immersive experience in the region of the French Riviera.

Here are 5 hikes around the French Riviera that all locals are familiar with and will showcase why the region has its name.

Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat

Located on a picturesque peninsula between Nice and Monaco, Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat offers stunning coastal hikes with breathtaking views of the French Riviera. The hiking trails here take you along the rugged coastline, passing by luxurious villas, pristine beaches, and lush Mediterranean vegetation.

One of the popular hikes in Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat is the Sentier des Douaniers, also known as the Coastal Path. This trail allows you to explore the entire peninsula, offering stunning views of the sparkling blue waters and the surrounding landscapes. Along the way, you’ll encounter hidden coves, rocky cliffs, charming fishing villages, and of course, the famous Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild.

Cap d’Antibes

Cap d’Antibes is renowned for its idyllic landscapes. The hiking trails in this area take you through a captivating mix of natural beauty and opulent architecture. As you traverse the trails, you’ll be treated to mesmerising views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding lush vegetation.

One of the most popular hikes in Cap d’Antibes is the Tour du Cap, a circular trail that circumnavigates the peninsula. This trail offers a diverse range of scenery, from hidden beaches and secluded coves to ancient fortresses and luxurious villas. Be sure to stop by the Garoupe Lighthouse, which provides panoramic views of the coastline and the shimmering waters.

Baou de Saint Jeannet

Nestled in the foothills of the French Alps, Baou de Saint Jeannet offers a fantastic hiking destination with its rocky cliffs, verdant landscapes, and panoramic vistas. This majestic mountain rises to a height of 800 meters and its protruding mass is so recognisable that you can spot it from most view points of Nice.

The trail to Baou de Saint Jeannet takes you through picturesque olive groves, fragrant pine forests, and rugged limestone formations. As you ascend, the views become increasingly spectacular, showcasing the sweeping plains, nearby villages, and the azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Reaching the summit will reward you with an all-encompassing vista that stretches from the Alps to the coastline.

Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer

The hike from Nice to Villefranche-sur-Mer offers a delightful coastal walk that combines the charm of both cities with the natural beauty of the Mediterranean. If you’d like to make a full day’s itinerary of exploring both Nice and Villefranche-sur-Mer, this trail is the perfect way to visit both cities without vehicular transport.

To find the trail, head off from Nice Port (Port Lympia) towards Coco Beach. Follow Boulevard Franck Pilatte until you reach the stairs downwards Cap de Nice. Follow the path for half a kilometre until you see another flight of stairs. Beware, these stairs are extremely steep and seemingly endless. You’ll be rewarded with a bird’s eye view of the coast once you’re up though, and this will be the toughest part of the hike by far.

The trail offers magnificent views of the azure waters, sandy beaches, and charming seaside villages. You’ll pass by hidden coves, historical sites, and beautiful gardens as you make your way along the coastline. Once you reach Villefranche-sur-Mer, take some time to explore its enchanting streets and enjoy a refreshing swim in its crystal-clear waters.

Nietzsche Trail in Eze

The Nietzsche Trail in Eze is a unique hiking experience that takes you through the stunning landscapes that inspired the famous philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. This trail starts in the medieval village of Eze and winds its way up to the ruins of the Eze Castle, perched on a hilltop with panoramic views of the French Riviera.

As you hike along the trail, you’ll be immersed in the natural beauty of the area, with scented pine trees, wildflowers, and Instagrammable backdrops at every turn. The trail is dotted with philosophical quotes from Nietzsche, adding a contemplative and reflective aspect to the hike. Once you reach the castle ruins, take a moment to soak in the views and reflect on the profound connection between nature and philosophy.

Once at Eze, you may want to visit the city’s botanical gardens perched at the top, you’ll get a unique experience of exploring an exotic garden with the spectacular view of the French Riviera.
